This city was ceded to France by the Piemont in 1860. It is situated in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. It has an exceptional geographical position with the blue of the Mediterranean Sea in the foreground and the white snowy mountain It is, therefore, not so surprising that Nice is the second French touristic town after Paris. Nice is renowned for its old town (le Vieux Nice), an immense pedestrian space with an impressing number of pubs, restaurants and nightclubs. Not far from "Le Vieux Nice" spreads out "La Promenade des Anglais", a six-kilometre alley with its numerous luxurious hotels and a magnificent view of the coast. The historical religious buildings of the city have been very well preserved.
Nice is also known for its festivals: "Le Carnaval de Nice", whose 125th edition took place from February 13th till March lst, has been held, under its current form, since 1873; the "Nice Jazz Festival" which takes place in July; "Les Nuits musicales de Nice" that take place in July and August; "Le Vieux-Nice Baroque en Musique", which offers a series of baroque music concert, takes place from October till May. There are also numerous festivities, like the "La Bataille des Fleurs" (the battle of flowers), a show involving about twenty flower-decorated carts with charming male and female models dressed in luxurious suits and extravagant headgears created for the occasion, throwing thousands of flowers to the spectators installed in stands along "La Promenade des Anglais". The gastronomy of Nice is essentially Mediterranean. It is strongly influenced by the nearness of the Provence, the Liguria, and the Piemont. It relies not only on local resources (olive oil, fruits and vegetables, etc.) but also on those from more distant parts of the country. |
